Privacy

We don't keep any files or data. Everything you add to Docs Aloud is cleared within 2 hours. This page explains exactly what happens when you use it.

Files you open

When you open or drop a file, your browser reads it and turns it into speech on your own computer or phone. The file is never uploaded to or stored on our servers. Documents are cleared from the page 2 hours after you add them, or as soon as you close the tab, whichever comes first.

Web pages you read

When you paste a web address, our server fetches that one page on your behalf, because browsers can't fetch other websites directly. The page is passed straight back to your browser. It isn't saved, cached or logged, and the address is sent in a way that keeps it out of our server logs. From then on it's treated like any other document and cleared within 2 hours.

Voices

Speech comes from the voices built into your device and browser. Some browsers offer "online" voices that are produced by the browser maker's servers. If you choose one of those, the sentence being read is sent to that company to produce the audio, under its own privacy terms. Voices without "online" in the name run entirely on your device.

Your settings

Your voice, speed, filters, saved readers and skip lists are kept in your own browser's storage so they're there next time. They never leave your device, and clearing your browser's site data removes them.

No accounts, cookies or trackers

Docs Aloud has no sign-up, sets no cookies, and loads no analytics, advertising or third-party scripts. Our web server keeps standard technical logs (such as IP address and the page of our site requested) for security, and these never include your documents or the web addresses you read.

Changes

If any of this changes, we will update this page first.
